Harrow Council is urging residents to be cautious when visiting local parks after a number of tree branches unexpectedly fell during the June heatwave.
A spokesperson for the council said via social media: “If you’re visiting our parks, please take some precaution. You may have seen on the news this week – we’re advising people to avoid sitting or congregating under large trees in parks.
“There have been some Sudden Branch Drop incidents in the borough during the June heatwave. This is when tree branches break off and fall to the ground unexpectedly.
“There isn’t a known cause for this but typically occurs during warm weather – heatwaves and changes in tree moisture levels are considered a possible factor.
“We have started to carry out additional inspections of trees. If you notice this at our parks or on the street, report it online.”
According to the BBC, safety notices have been issued by Harrow Council following incidents in Stanmore, Hatch End and Pinner. No injuries were reported.
Residents can report any concerns via the Harrow Council website: www.harrow.gov.uk/environment-parks/harrows-trees.
