A new exhibition celebrating imagination and invention is set to open at the Heath Robinson Museum in Pinner later this month.
Running from 26 July to 26 October, Contraptions & Connections: A Celebration of Imagination and Ingenious Invention will explore the playful world of quirky machines, kinetic sculptures and curious creations – from both past and present.
The museum, located at the rear of Pinner Memorial Park, is known for celebrating the life and work of William Heath Robinson, often referred to as the original “Gadget King”.

The exhibition will showcase a wide range of exhibits, from ancient automata to modern contraptions made from recycled materials, blending art, science and storytelling in inventive ways.
“Contraptions & Connections celebrates the wit and wonder of creative engineering. It’s about the joy of making things move — for no reason other than to delight, to entertain, and to provoke a smile,” said Chris Westbrook, Exhibition Curator.
Highlights include a musical machine built from piano and sewing machine parts, fish made from recycled plastic that appear to swim mid-air, and a steam-powered train built entirely from bric-a-brac. Visitors can also see a self-drawing chalkboard, whimsical football automatons, and a witty take on a rocking/electric chair.

The exhibition will launch on Saturday 26 July with live artist demonstrations, family activities and a first look at the displays. A talk by art historian Peter Higginson will take place on Saturday 13 September exploring the work and legacy of Heath Robinson.
The museum is open Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Tickets are £8 for adults, while under-18s and Art Fund members can enter for free. More details are available at www.heathrobinsonmuseum.org.
