Two more Harrow parks have been recognised for their quality and upkeep as they join the list of Green Flag award winners for 2024.
From today (15 July), Hatch End’s Riverside Park and Chandos Recreation Ground in Edgware have been awarded Green Flag status — the first time in a generation that Harrow has added two new sites to the list.
They join six other parks in the borough that have retained their Green Flag awards: Kenton Recreation Ground, Pinner Memorial Park, Canons Park, Harrow Recreation Ground, Headstone Manor Park and Roxeth Recreation Ground.
Green Flag status is a national award that recognises well-managed parks and green spaces in the UK. It means the space is clean, safe, and environmentally friendly, offering a high standard for visitors to enjoy.
Riverside Park, located next to Harrow Arts Centre, underwent an upgrade in 2023 and now features a children’s playground, wildflowers, a woodland area and an outdoor performance stage. Chandos Recreation Ground, supported by the Silk Stream Project, includes a new wetland area designed to help reduce the risk of flooding. Both parks have seen major improvements over the past year and are now proving popular with residents.
Cllr Janet Mote, Cabinet Member for Community & Culture, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we’ve not only retained our six award winning parks, but we’ve gained two new ones. It’s come at a perfect time as we mark 60 years of Harrow. I know this will mean a lot to our residents who love using our parks.
“Alongside our £6m investment in parks over three years, I know there has been an incredible amount of work that has taken place to deliver this flagship action. I’d like to thank our staff, park user groups and volunteers who have been key to achieving this. It’s a fantastic example of how listening, co-designing, and working together can make our parks truly special for our residents.”
Securing the two new Green Flag awards was one of 30 flagship actions listed in Harrow Council’s corporate plan to help restore pride in the borough.
The council has also confirmed that plans are in place to upgrade West Harrow Recreation Ground with a view to applying for Green Flag status in 2026.
Residents are also encouraged to explore local parks during Love Parks Week, taking place from 25 July to 3 August.
