‘Happy and proud’ – Pupils thrive at South Harrow primary, says Ofsted

Earlsmead Primary School in South Harrow has been praised by Ofsted inspectors for maintaining the high standards set at its last inspection. Following a visit in June 2025, the school was recognised for its inclusive environment, well-behaved pupils and ambitious teaching.

Inspectors found that pupils are “happy and proud to be members of Earlsmead Primary School,” and noted that children “enjoy their lessons and feel safe at school.”

The report highlighted that “adults have high expectations of pupils’ achievements” and that children “rise to these high expectations, displaying positive attitudes to learning and achieving well over time.”

The school, led by headteacher Barbara Graham and part of the Tithe Academy Trust, is supported by CEO John Reavely and a board chaired by Kevin McEwan. Inspectors noted the trust’s “clear understanding of the school’s priorities,” with leaders taking “effective steps to develop the curriculum and sustain a strong culture of inclusion and ambition.”

Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) were found to be well supported, with the school described as “very inclusive.” Inspectors said: “The school identifies the needs of pupils with SEND accurately,” and praised teachers for using techniques such as “pre-teaching vocabulary and number skills” to help pupils get ready for lessons.

Ofsted found that enrichment activities were “carefully woven into the curriculum,” with pupils enjoying clubs such as first aid, sign language, and gardening. Trips and residential visits were also praised for bringing classroom learning into the real world.

Behaviour at the school was commended. The report stated: “Pupils are polite, friendly, and welcoming. They consistently demonstrate Earlsmead’s positive learning behaviours, such as resilience, curiosity, and cooperation.”

The school’s approach to reading, starting in early years, was highlighted as a strength. “Pupils, including in the early years and those with SEND, become increasingly independent and confident readers,” the report said.

Inspectors also noted that “pupils are proud of the role that they play in the community,” pointing to activities like visits to care homes and carol singing.

While the overall findings were very positive, inspectors did identify one area for improvement. They said: “The school does not consistently use assessment in the foundation subjects to identify what pupils have remembered or where they have gaps in understanding. As a result, some pupils do not build securely on prior learning.”

Staff morale was described as high, with Ofsted noting: “Staff are proud to work at the school. Teachers feel supported by clear priorities and manageable workloads.”

The inspection stated that Earlsmead Primary “has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection,” with safeguarding arrangements also confirmed to be effective.
