Oasis set to return to Wembley after 16 years as London leads global music scene

Oasis are set to return to Wembley Stadium for the first time in 16 years this Friday, as part of a record-breaking summer of live music in the capital.

London is hosting more concerts by major global stars this year than any other city in the world, with over 3.6 million fans expected to attend shows across major venues including The O2, Wembley Stadium, and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “This summer, some of the world’s biggest music stars are performing more times in London than anywhere else – showing why we are the undisputed capital of music.”

Beyoncé performed six nights at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in June, Billie Eilish just concluded her six-night run at The O2, and Coldplay are preparing for 10 shows at Wembley next month. Usher also performed a 10-night residency earlier this year.

Oasis’s return adds to a stacked calendar, which has already included performances from BLACKPINK, Noah Kahan, Zach Bryan and Sabrina Carpenter, with BST Hyde Park drawing over 500,000 fans across eight sold-out shows.

According to UK Music, 7.5 million music tourists came to London last year, generating £2.7 billion in revenue. Live Nation reports that 61% of London gig-goers this summer have travelled from other parts of the UK, while 16% came from overseas.

Grassroots venues also play a key role in the city’s music ecosystem, with 179 smaller venues welcoming over 4.2 million audience members in the past year.

John Langford of AEG Europe said: “In just the first half of this year alone, The O2 arena has sold over 1.4 million tickets and hosted 115 performances — testament to London’s status as the global capital of live music.”

Denis Desmond from Live Nation UK & Ireland added: “This year marks Live Nation’s busiest summer season ever in the UK with over two million attendees in London alone.”

Sadiq Khan added: “From the very best stadium and festival headliners to upcoming stars at grassroots venues, I’m proud that London’s music scene is leading the way as we continue to build a better London for everyone.”
