Mayor of Harrow visits twin town Douai for annual festival

The Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Anjana Patel, has visited Harrow’s twin town of Douai in France to take part in the annual Fêtes de Gayant.

The event, attended by over 10,000 people, featured giant effigies being paraded through the streets. The Mayor joined Douai’s Mayor, Frédéric Chéreau, for a Civic Lunch where the two exchanged gifts.

The Fêtes de Gayant dates back to the 16th century and honours Saint Maurand. The tradition includes giant figures known as Monsieur and Madame Gayant being carried through the town with musicians. The link between Harrow and Douai began in 1979 through a town twinning programme.

This year’s visit also coincided with the Tour de France passing through Douai for the first time in 25 years. Visitors from countries including Colombia, Sweden, and the UK took part in the event. A concert by the Municipal Band followed the parade.

Mayor Patel said: “It is a privilege to represent Harrow and meet the Mayor of our twin town, Douai. As Harrow marks 60 years as a London borough, we are also celebrating over 40 years of friendship with Douai, rooted in kindness, respect, and shared values. I am proud to honour this milestone in Douai and further strengthen our friendship.

“Travel from London to Douai took just a couple of hours, and the hospitality in the town was outstanding. The people of Douai are kind, courteous, extremely proud of their heritage, and welcoming to all. This experience has left a very positive impression of French culture and the warm spirit of Douai’s community. I hope for many of Harrow’s residents to pencil this lovely celebration into their calendar.

“Bravo to Mayor Frédéric Chéreau and his team of dedicated civil servants, who take immense pride in their civic duties. Merci!”

Douai will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Fêtes de Gayant in 2030, and planning is already underway.

During the visit, Mayor Patel also invited Mayor Chéreau and residents of Douai to visit the first traditional Hindu temple in France, which is currently being built in Paris.
