Major £14.5m funding boost agreed for roads, parks and CCTV in Brent

A £14.5million package of improvements to roads, parks and public safety has been agreed by Brent Council’s Cabinet.

The funding comes from the Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL), money raised from developers building in the borough. It will support Brent’s growth while also delivering upgrades that residents will see in their day-to-day lives.

Councillor Krupa Sheth, Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement, said: “This investment is about more than just resurfacing roads or replacing cameras, it’s about putting pride back into Brent’s streets. We’re determined to create a cleaner, safer, greener borough where every resident feels safe, connected, and proud of where they live.”

Roads and pavements

An extra £10.7million will be spent on highway maintenance, on top of the £15million already invested since 2022. The money will go towards repairing potholes, fixing uneven pavements, upgrading street lighting and removing tree stumps.

Resurfacing has already taken place on roads including Harrow Road and Oakington Avenue, with more areas to follow based on the council’s data-led approach that targets the worst-affected spots first.

Parks and green spaces

Three Brent parks have recently been awarded Green Flag status for the first time in over a decade. A further £730,000 will now be invested in green spaces to upgrade footpaths and replace play equipment.

Council patrols have been stepped up at Gladstone Park, Roundwood and King Edward VII Park, with CCTV also being used to deter those who damage or litter in public spaces.

CCTV investment

The council’s Don’t Mess with Brent campaign has already led to 5,714 enforcement actions this year, more than double the previous year. Now, £3.1million will be spent upgrading the borough’s CCTV network.

A total of 130 old analogue cameras will be replaced with new digital ones to improve coverage and image quality. The council says this will help tackle crime, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour.

Works starting this summer

The £14.5million programme will begin this summer and run into 2026, making it one of the council’s largest recent investments in public spaces.

The council says the funding will support its wider goals on growth, active travel, public safety and tackling the climate emergency.
