The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is run by local councils together with the Food Standards Agency. When businesses are inspected, officers look at things like how food is handled, the cleanliness of the premises, and how well food safety is managed.
A 5-star rating is the highest score possible and shows that hygiene standards are “very good”.
Anyone can look up the latest ratings for local businesses at any time on the Food Standards Agency’s website.
