A major police operation took place in central London today (Saturday 9 August) as thousands of people joined demonstrations linked to the recently banned group Palestine Action.
Officers were stationed in Russell Square and Parliament Square from the morning, where large crowds gathered. Within the Parliament Square protest, police reported seeing many placards showing support for Palestine Action – a proscribed organisation under the Terrorism Act – and made multiple arrests.
Police make over 300 arrests
The Metropolitan Police later confirmed that 365 people were arrested in Parliament Square for displaying such placards. The force rejected suggestions that only a small number of people had been detained, stating that anyone found with a placard backing the group was either arrested or in the process of being arrested.
Those whose details were confirmed were released on bail with strict conditions preventing them from taking part in future protests. Others were taken to custody suites for processing.
Police also made seven other arrests during the day, including five for assaults on officers. The Met said no serious injuries were reported.
At the same time, a separate march organised by the Palestine Coalition set off from Russell Square, travelling to Whitehall via Aldwych and the Strand. One person was arrested on that march for displaying a placard supporting Palestine Action.
The group was officially banned in July, making it a criminal offence to be a member or to show public support. Police say they will continue to take action where necessary.
Further updates on the operation are expected later.
