Harrow’s town centre and Wealdstone streets were among the areas targeted by volunteers who picked up more than 130 bags of rubbish as part of World Clean Up Day.
The effort was led by Who Is Hussain? London, a social justice charity that operates globally, and saw volunteers out across Harrow, Brent, Ealing and Westminster on Saturday 20 September. The amount collected was said to be enough to line the length of a football pitch.
The London branch of the group teamed up with Harrow Litter Pickers, LAGER Can Ealing, Veolia in Westminster and Brent Council’s Don’t Mess With Brent campaign to help tackle rubbish and fly-tipping.
Local figures also lent their support, including Gareth Thomas, Member of Parliament for Harrow West; Aysha Raza, Councillor for Ealing’s Central Greenford; and Bassam Mahfouz, London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon.
Bassam Mahfouz AM said in a video message: “I care passionately about our environment and about our street scene. We have got to take pride in our local area and that is why I am joining Who Is Hussain today who are doing a street clean up in Kirchin Road, West Ealing.”
Gareth Thomas MP wrote in a social media post: “My huge thanks to the Harrow Litter Pickers, the Who Is Hussain volunteers, and Harrow Central Mosque for hosting us today.”
Kumail Jaffer, the London team lead of Who Is Hussain?, said: “World Clean Up Day was a resounding success and a testament to community spirit. Fostering community spirit is a key pillar of our work because looking after our neighbours was a core value of Hussain Ibn Ali’s philosophy.
“But the fight against litter and fly-tipping cannot be confined to one day a year. Keeping our streets clean is an everyday civic and patriotic duty. It is about taking responsibility for our shared spaces and showing pride in our communities and in our country. We are grateful to our volunteers, local representatives, partner organisations, and councils for working together to make London cleaner and safer for all.”
