Harrow saw its first snowfall of the season this morning (Wednesday, 19 November), with flakes falling for around an hour and a half. The snow was short lived but was thicker in some areas than others.
Residents sent images and videos to Harrow Online showing the snowfall across the borough including Wealdstone, Pinner, Edgware and more, which have since been shared on our social media pages.
While Harrow only saw light snow, the Met Office has issued wider warnings for parts of the UK. An Amber warning for snow is in place for areas in the North on Thursday, with further Yellow warnings for snow and ice across Northern Ireland, Wales, northern and southwest England and much of Scotland.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “Cold Arctic air from the north is firmly in charge of the UK’s weather, bringing the first notable cold snap of this autumn and giving an early taste of winter weather.
“As a result, winter hazards are likely through the next few days, with snow and ice a particular hazard, and the coldest conditions likely on Wednesday and Thursday.”
He added that while not all areas will see snow settling, some parts of the UK could see several centimetres, especially in higher ground.
The Met Office also warned that ice will remain a concern overnight this week, with temperatures expected to drop well below average.
Dr Ron Cook, NHS 24 Executive Medical Director, said: “With icy conditions expected, we urge everyone to wrap up warmly and take extra care when outside. Cold weather can be particularly challenging for older people, young children, and those with long-term health conditions, so please check on neighbours and loved ones to ensure they have what they need to stay warm and safe.
“Simple steps like wearing sturdy footwear and allowing more time for journeys can help prevent slips and falls. Also remember cold air can also make breathing difficult for people with asthma or COPD. Keep your medication handy and try to limit time outdoors during severe cold spells.”
Conditions are expected to turn milder by the end of the week, with rain moving in from the west on Friday and more unsettled weather possible over the weekend.
