Harrow Online took a short trip a little further afield to Ruislip to visit Refill Your Cup, the area’s first zero-waste shop.
Founded by Natalie and Laura, Refill Your Cup is a project years in the making. The pair first met in 2019 at a yoga class and bonded over a shared interest in sustainability and finding better alternatives to everyday living. From there, the idea for a zero-waste shop serving the local community was born.
The shop, based on Ickenham Road just off Ruislip High Street, has been open since October and is already welcoming customers looking for a different way to do their weekly shop. Residents are encouraged to bring their own containers, pay by weight, and cut out single-use plastic. The range includes dried goods, cleaning liquids, personal hygiene products, milk, and freshly ground nut butters made in-store. Accessibility, affordability and sustainability sit at the centre of what the shop does.
While there, Harrow Online was carefully dispensing black beans into a jar brought from home. It was oddly satisfying, though a bigger bag would have helped. Jars are also available in-store, but stock depends on donations, so customers are advised to bring their own where possible. The emphasis is clearly on community and conscious consumption.
Several customers stopped by to refill laundry detergent bottles, something that many people may not think about until they see it in action. It quickly highlights just how much single-use plastic is bought each week, often without realising it.
Outside the shop, a large bucket of used tennis balls had been left out for dogs to take and play with. A simple idea, but one that fits the shop’s wider approach and will be appreciated by local dog owners.
Refill Your Cup aims to help local people reduce waste, rethink buying habits and make more conscious choices for both the environment and everyday life. It was a trip well worth making, and a reminder that sometimes going a little further afield can uncover something genuinely worthwhile.
