Police have made further arrests in Harrow town centre using Live Facial Recognition technology, as part of ongoing enforcement following Harrow Online’s earlier coverage of the success of the operation in the town centre.
Harrow Online previously reported on the use of facial recognition in Harrow and the results achieved by local officers.
On Tuesday, 6 January, officers from across Harrow worked alongside local policing teams to deploy Live Facial Recognition technology in busy parts of the town centre.
During the deployment, several alerts were generated.
One man attempted to leave the area after being flagged by the system but was swiftly stopped by officers. He was confirmed as being wanted in relation to a violent robbery in a neighbouring borough and was arrested without further incident. He has been taken into custody, where enquiries are ongoing.
In a separate alert, officers identified a man wanted for breaching a court-imposed Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). When officers approached, he attempted to leave the area but was detained promptly and taken to police custody. He was interviewed by specialist officers in relation to the suspected breach. Enquiries remain ongoing.
Live Facial Recognition is used in targeted, time-limited deployments. The technology compares live images against a secure watchlist of individuals wanted by police or assessed as posing a risk to the public. Each deployment is carefully planned, authorised and overseen.
Police Sergeant Killian Kissane said: “This was a well-planned operation that showed how technology, when used responsibly alongside experienced officers, can make our communities safer. Acting quickly meant we were able to arrest someone wanted for a serious offence and remove that risk from the streets.”
A local resident said: “Seeing officers use approved technology in a careful and proportionate way is reassuring. It feels like a sensible approach that helps keep people safe in the town centre.”
