A consultant surgeon at Watford General Hospital has received one of the UK’s most respected awards in surgical training.
Mr Vanash Patel, a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the hospital, has been awarded the Silver Scalpel Award by the Association of Surgeons in Training. The award recognises surgeons who make an outstanding contribution to training and mentoring the next generation of doctors.
Mr Patel plays a key role in teaching surgeons in colorectal cancer surgery and robotic surgery. He has developed a structured training pathway that allows trainees to learn colorectal procedures while also gaining experience with robotic techniques and simulation.
The aim of the programme is not just to train surgeons to operate robotic systems, but to develop well-rounded colorectal specialists who can safely deliver advanced minimally invasive surgery.

The award is particularly significant because nominations are submitted directly by trainee surgeons.
One of the trainees who nominated him said: “Vanash is an exemplary surgeon, educator, and innovator, and his achievements in the early years of his consultancy are both inspiring and a benchmark for others.”
Mr Patel said training the next generation of surgeons is a key responsibility for senior doctors in the NHS.
“High quality training ensures that innovation, safety and good clinical judgement continue to evolve within the NHS”, he explains.
Speaking about receiving the award, he added: “Training is one of the most important responsibilities we have as consultants. The surgeons we train today will be caring for patients for the next 30 or 40 years.
“It is a tremendous honour to win, particularly because the award is nominated by trainees. Training has always been one of the most meaningful parts of my role as a consultant.”
