Students at Shaftesbury High School took part in a special Community Day last week aimed at giving back to the local area through a range of hands-on projects.
The event, held on 7 May, saw students get involved in activities including creating artwork for a new school mural, helping regenerate one of the school’s garden spaces and taking part in litter picking around nearby streets.
The day was supported by Timegivers Charity volunteers as well as Harrow Litter Pickers.
As part of the gardening project, students planted more than £1,000 worth of donated plants, while another group worked on designing a mural which is expected to be installed in the school playground later this year.
Staff said the day gave students opportunities they may not usually experience, while helping to build teamwork, confidence and a sense of belonging within the community.
Deborah Stone, Community Engagement Manager, said: “It was an uplifting day and such a positive experience for everyone. Just shows what young people with disabilities can do if given the chance.”
Kate Deighton, Founder of Timegivers, said: “ was just so fantastic and I am still reeling from the excitement of it all and wanted to say thank you so much for allowing us the privilege of being able to work in Shaftesbury High School with such a lovely community of people, all dedicated to giving the children a real chance in life.
“The school allowed us to provide meaningful volunteering opportunities to children who really appreciated it, and their energy and enthusiasm was apparent throughout the school. We couldn’t be more grateful and we feel very privileged to be working with you.”
Students who took part also shared their thoughts on the day.
Year 8 student Meena said: “I made a sparkly lake.”
Year 9 student Max said: “I got to draw my football club badge on the mural.”
Year 8 student Navid said: “I designed the H for Harrow.”
Abdul, from the sixth form, said: “This morning is excellent.”
Toriko, from the sixth form, added: “I think it is best to do something like this when you know the local area.”
One Year 9 student said: “We should be litter picking every week!”
Mohameed, from the sixth form, said: “Roots away….”
Year 9 student Salma said: “I enjoyed the microplastics and helping the environment.”
Year 9 student Edward added: “I enjoyed the litter picking and the fresh air.”
