More sections of the London Underground now have 4G and 5G coverage, with Transport for London (TfL) saying the entire Tube network remains on track to be connected by the end of the year.
The latest expansion means passengers can now access mobile coverage in additional tunnel sections on the Bakerloo, Metropolitan, Circle and District lines, as well as at more stations across the network.
TfL said around 60 per cent of stations that are below ground now have mobile coverage. New areas that have recently gone live include parts of the Bakerloo line between Queen’s Park and Edgware Road, sections of the Metropolitan line near King’s Cross St Pancras, and parts of the Circle and District lines in central London.
Coverage has also been introduced at stations including Vauxhall, Gloucester Road and Barbican, while work is continuing at major stations such as Paddington, Victoria and King’s Cross St Pancras.
The rollout is being delivered by TfL and Boldyn Networks, with all four major UK mobile operators – Three, EE, Vodafone and Virgin Media O2 – taking part.
Rebecca Bissell, Director of Information Technology at TfL, said: “We are delighted to be delivering more mobile coverage to our customers across our Tube network. Providing mobile coverage across our network means customers can stay better connected while they travel, allowing them to stay in contact with friends and family, shop online and keep up with the latest news and sports results.”
She added: “We remain focused on having 4G and 5G mobile coverage across the whole Tube network by the end of the year.”
TfL said hundreds of engineers are working overnight to install the infrastructure, with most of the Northern, Bakerloo and Metropolitan lines expected to have tunnel coverage by the end of the summer.
The network will also support the new Emergency Services Network, which will allow emergency services to access critical information while responding to incidents across the Underground.
