A young swimmer from Northwood is returning to the national stage after qualifying for four events at one of Britain’s leading age-group competitions.
Mia Garner will represent Borough of Harrow Swimming Club at the Aquatics GB Next Gen Championships, previously known as the British Summer National Championships.
The seven-day competition is being held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield from July 16 to 22.
Mia has qualified for the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, as well as the 200m individual medley.
Invitation-only national competition
Entry to the championships is by invitation only, based on long-course performances recorded during a designated national qualifying window.
Only the highest-ranked swimmers in each age group are offered places, with either 20 or 24 competitors invited for most events depending on their age.
Mia previously competed at the championships in 2025 after entering the 100m backstroke ranked number one nationally in her age group.
She went on to reach the 100m backstroke final, where she finished fifth, and placed 14th overall in the 200m individual medley.
Her strongest result came in the 200m backstroke. Mia qualified for the final with a personal-best time of 2:24.53 before improving again in the final, finishing in 2:23.25 to win a bronze medal.
Returning with four qualifying events
This year, Mia has added the 50m backstroke to her programme, meaning she has qualified across all three backstroke distances as well as the individual medley.
Borough of Harrow Swimming Club said the four qualifications reflected her continued progress following another demanding season of training and competition.
Head Coach Daniel Andrawos, who has worked closely with Mia during her development, will travel to Sheffield with her for the championships.
Mia trains with Borough of Harrow Swimming Club, which is based at Harrow Leisure Centre and supports swimmers from beginner level through to regional and national competition.
The club said her return to the national championships was a proud moment for her family, coaches and teammates, as well as an inspiration to younger swimmers.
