Northolt station becomes step-free with new lift and footbridge

Northolt Tube station has become step-free for the first time following the opening of a new lift and footbridge, improving journeys for passengers travelling between Harrow, Northolt and Heathrow.

The Central line station, which is also served by the Superloop SL9 bus route connecting Harrow with Heathrow Airport, is now the 95th Underground station in London to offer step-free access.

New lift opens at Northolt station

TfL said a new footbridge has been built between the ticket office and platform, alongside a lift providing an accessible route through the station.

Manual boarding ramps are also available, meaning passengers can now travel step-free from street level onto trains.

Two accessible toilets are also being provided as part of the improvements and are expected to open shortly.

The upgrade will particularly benefit wheelchair users, older passengers, people with mobility difficulties and parents travelling with pushchairs.

Bassam Mahfouz, London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon, said: “Today marks a fantastic moment for Northolt and for everyone who uses this station, after years of campaigning and waiting.

“For too long, passengers who use wheelchairs, have mobility difficulties, travel with young children have been unable to use the station, or struggled.”

TfL said the new step-free facilities could create more accessible journey options for people travelling between Harrow and Heathrow.

The SL9 is also due to increase in frequency to up to every 10 minutes from next month.

More nearby stations could become step-free

TfL is continuing work to improve accessibility elsewhere in London.

Feasibility and design work is currently taking place at 45 Underground stations, including Alperton and Eastcote, both of which are progressing towards the end of the design stage.

Surrey Quays station in south-east London has also become step-free this week following the opening of a new accessible entrance and lifts.

More than a third of London Underground stations are now step-free, according to TfL.
