A Harrow fish and chip shop has been named among the top 40 takeaways in the UK as part of a major national competition.
Skipjacks, on Streatfield Road in Kenton, has made the longlist for Takeaway of the Year at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2027. The awards are organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers, with businesses judged on areas including food quality, customer service, industry knowledge and sustainability.
One of just three London shops
Skipjacks is one of only three London businesses to make the top 40, alongside Chipping Wharf Fish & Chips in Bow and Fish! Kitchen in Southwark.
The 40 businesses will now go through further judging as the list is reduced ahead of the final stages of the competition.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said: “As we celebrate the 39th year of the National Fish & Chip Awards, it’s brilliant to see talent, passion, excellent professionalism and dedication to their craft on display.”
He added: “Every year, the Takeaway of the Year standard continues to rise and this new list of top 40 contenders exemplify that.”
Serving Harrow for more than 40 years
Skipjacks describes itself as a family-run business which first began selling fish and chips in London in 1969.
According to the restaurant’s own history, the family later moved to Belgravia before arriving in Kenton in 1982. The business says the move to Kenton came about because the owner’s grandmother struggled to find good quality fresh fish locally to make her fish kebabs.
More than four decades later, Skipjacks remains on Streatfield Road, operating both a restaurant and takeaway. Its menu includes traditional battered fish and chips as well as grilled fish, matzo dishes, Mediterranean options and halal food.
The National Fish & Chip Awards are now in their 39th year and recognise businesses across a number of categories, including Restaurant of the Year, Young Fish Frier of the Year and Takeaway of the Year.
Skipjacks is based at 268-270 Streatfield Road, Harrow, HA3 9BY.
