Vaughan Primary School in West Harrow has been praised for pupils’ achievement, behaviour and inclusion following its latest Ofsted inspection.
Inspectors visited the school on 14 July, with the report published on 28 September. Vaughan was rated at the Strong standard for achievement, attendance and behaviour, and inclusion. Curriculum and teaching, early years, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing were judged to meet the Expected standard. Safeguarding standards were also met.
Strong achievement and behaviour
The report highlighted pupils’ academic performance and said: “Pupils are extremely well prepared for the next phase of their education.”
Inspectors also found that pupils have “highly positive attitudes to learning”, while relationships between pupils and staff were described positively.
Ofsted added: “Bullying is rare. It is dealt with promptly and effectively by staff if it does occur.”
Attendance and behaviour were both assessed at the Strong standard, alongside the school’s work to support disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and disabilities.
The report also said: “Pupils enjoy coming to school each and every day.”
Areas for development
Inspectors identified some areas where Vaughan could develop further. These included making sure teachers consistently check pupils’ understanding and giving children enough opportunity to explain their thinking before moving on.
Ofsted also identified communication and language in early years and some aspects of personal, social and health education as areas for further development.
Headteacher responds
Speaking to Harrow Online following the publication of the report, Headteacher Karen Jones said: “We are proud of the school that we are and although the last week of Summer Term was a challenge in terms of inspection, we didn’t get a chance to showcase the school. While we accept the report, we know that the whole community makes Vaughan, the special place that it is.”
The school, based on Vaughan Road in West Harrow, has 668 pupils aged between three and 11.
