Pavement widening measures updated in selected parts of Harrow

A scheme, which has seen pedestrian areas widened in a number of areas, will be updated to reflect the council’s latest review which includes the current business and residential support needs.

Harrow Council has kept the schemes under ongoing review and have reacted to changing circumstances by adjusting the schemes where necessary

The Pedestrian StreetSpace programme was introduced in June on a temporary basis in response to the coronavirus health crisis.

The measures are located predominantly outside shops with narrower footways where there is higher footfall to support people to adhere to the government social distancing guidelines and slow the spread of the virus.

These measures are reviewed every month.

Councils were required to implement emergency schemes with unprecedented pace.

The infection rates in Harrow are increasing in all age groups and are following the national trend. The need to maintain social distancing measures is essential and, therefore, a number of the schemes will remain in place.

However, three schemes; Streatfield Road, Queensbury, Honeypot Lane, Canons Park and Kenton Road, Kenton East schemes are to be removed and an alternative advisory one-way scheme on the footways will be introduced to reduce social contact.

Cllr Varsha Parmar, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: “Safety remains our number one priority and people should adhere to the Hands, Face, Space mantra. The changes we have announced will see an advisory one-way scheme put in place and the current barriers removed.

“These temporary schemes, which are part of wider measures including low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs), school streets and cycle lanes, make it safer for people to move around the borough. We will react quickly to changing circumstances, as in this case and going forward.”
