The Harrow War Memorial has been successfully relocated to Harrow Town Centre after stonemasons carefully moved it over the course of the week.
The move was necessary due to the forthcoming regeneration of the former Harrow Civic Centre site.
Commenting on the relocation in this weeks MyHarrow newsletter, Cllr Paul Osborn, Leader of the London Borough of Harrow said, “It’s great to see Harrow’s war memorial installed in its new town centre location.
“Work to re-site the granite memorial was completed this week. You can see the whole process, carried out by skilled stonemasons, in our video linked below.
“We’ve moved the memorial from outside the Civic Centre because of the council’s plans to regenerate the site, with green community space planned for its old location. Its new site gives this important memorial more prominence and brings it closer to our community.
“The memorial will continue to be central to our annual commemorations, with Remembrance services conducted in the town centre from this year onwards – we’ll confirm further details nearer the time.
“The grounds of the old Civic Centre are home to another important war memorial. The El Alamein Stone taken from the site of the decisive Second World War battle, is dedicated to ‘those who gave their lives for peace’. We’re carefully considering options for the relocation of this memorial also.”
The relocation of the memorial has been well received by residents, with many expressing on social media that the town centre is a more suitable location than the previous site.
